A friend of mine somehow managed to plug his usb key into my laptop backwards and shorted the damn thing. I know it doesn't (well shouldn't) fit in upside down, but in a lot of devices the only clue is the little seam in the outer connector. BTW: my crimper model is the same exact crimper Dokert was using when he was building all those harnesses years ago on here so it must work well.Originally posted by robotic_tourist:It would also be cool if USB was more visibly keyed. one thing to keep in mind is most vendors don't sell all wire gauge of pins because some gauges are much cheaper and when using the wrong pins you get crappy results. My open barrel crimper will do everything it takes those two crimpers to do and also mine crimps both wire and jacketing in one squeeze of the crimpers and that way you can't over crimp the pin and break the back of the pins. Plus you have to crimp wire and jacketing separate with these both and you can over crimp them and bend or break the backs of the pins and then they won't go in and out of the connector properly. 084 with them both (based on wire gauge) but you have to use the proper wire gauge of pin and proper crimper otherwise your crimp will not work out well. These are gauge sized crimpers not connector/pin type, which means you can crimp. Or go to as they have the most common stuff. 156" or 2.5mm (ignoring power connector sizes).īest bet, take a picture and post. Those 2 lasted me for the first 5 years of me being in this hobby. If you won't do a lot, don't waste your money. IF you think you'll do a lot of crimping, get the pairs the double crimp (wire and insulation at the same time). Don't over crimp (squeeze too hard) and you'll be fine. They aren't "great" but will get the job done. These two will cover 90% of what you want to do. 1" (I double these for the 2.5mm, I actually have a different crimper that I use now for them, but they are more expensive.) So, it wouldn't really decrease my crimper count. I've seen a line of crimpers that has like 5 sizes in each them (don't remember the name off hand), but for most of the stuff I do, I would need to buy both the large and small size. I have 4 different pairs, which all work for at least 2 different things. Of course if you want other options (gold plating, etc), they're available too.ĭifferent size contacts require different crimpers. but it is much more convenient if crimping by hand to not have to cut/break it away from the strip of connectors.Īnyway, to answer your question directly, I believe these are the correct pins: Note that the bulk packaged connectors are generally more expensive than the cut tape. You can click those model number links on their site to give you all the options for those series'. KK® 254 Crimp Housing, Friction Ramp, 10 Circuits For example, the part you're looking at: In the case of Molex, their site is really good. but if you look at the "Mating Products" and "Associated Product" sections, you'll usually find the other side of the connector and the crimp pins. You can't always rely on that information, so you'll want to verify any suggested parts are correct. Generally, a good hint is at the bottom of the Digikey page.
